Return to live events
The Covid-19 pandemic put live events on hold for over a year, and Kubecon 2021 was our first time back in action, which meant we needed a booth backdrop and furniture layout, shirts, stickers, and a theme to tie everything together. Since the event was to be hosted in Southern California, we decided that integrating a skateboard themed booth would match well with both local attendees and people visiting from out of the area looking for the SoCal experience.

SoCal swag
We wanted our booth workers to be wearing gear that matched the aesthetic of the booth. We printed custom shirts and checkerboard socks for each person at the booth, and gave away handfuls of mini skateboard stickers. We've recently started utilizing a direct-to-garment print vendor so that we no longer have to manage inventory, shipping, or worry about quantity minimums.

Custom skateboards
To grab attention in a sea of technology branding, I illustrated eight custom skateboards to be raffled off to booth visitors that booked a meeting with us. The design of each board is based on an Open Source project whose technology is part of the Mirantis product ecosystem. I used a variety of processes and tools here, but for the most part did an initial sketch in Procreate then re-drew in Illustrator.

SK8 or die
I received nothing but positive feedback on the booth design, furniture layout, and swag items (especially the skateboards, which were a blast to create.) We're planning on running this theme again at upcoming events.
